A quick note: To your left is an iPhone displaying the home screen from my new favourite app, Get Running ($1.99). This app is based on the same concept as Couch to 5K and I'm sure several other apps, in which a human voice coaches you gradually from short interval training to the ultimate peak of physical achievement - being able to run five kilometres without stopping.
The reason this is getting mention here is because this app is why I've been able to stomach the neverending Edmonton winter over the last week or so. Sure running is great on its own. And -40C is great if you're indoors. Put the two together, on the other hand, and you've got a recipe for frostbitten profanity. But the secret weapon in Get Running that will actually keep you running, is a soft, faintly British, and downright sexy voice telling you what to do. "Keep going, you're almost there" she says. "Only thirty more seconds," she coos in your ear. Baby, for you I can do sixty.
I've named her Hope. While you're running, she warms you from the inside out - starting below the waist.
